British Invasion in American Cinema

Andrew Garfield

With the 2012 London Olympics coming up, there’s going to be a lot of British pride covering the world’s airwaves!

But in America… we’ve already been infiltrated by the Brits on the big screen!

Superheroes as American as Spider-man are now being played by charming Union Jack gents with impressively disguised accents.

Well done Andrew Garfield…

But even the Batman franchise isn’t safe… Bruce Wayne’s trusty Butler Alfred has been played by renowned British actor Michael Caine for all three of Christopher Nolan’s Batman films.

Look for him in the Dark Knight Rises!

So who else has charmed American audiences with their English way?

If Keira Knightley ever needs a friend for the end of the world, we’re sure she’ll find plenty on American shores! Knightly has taken the film world by storm since starring alongside Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl.

The actress now finds time to film American and British films at her leisure.

As does Kate Winslet, who first won the world over by playing the love-struck American, Rose, in Titanic.

Equally loved and respected as an actor is Colin Firth – who’s stutter in The King’s Speech won him an Oscar and helped the film take the title of Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2011.

Long live these Kings – and Queens – of the cinema!
